Tight security arrangements notwithstanding, a section of crowd shouted anti-government slogans inside the stadium on Sunday, a common refrain during the ongoing anti-CAA protests in the state.

During the break of the abandoned match, when the giant screen displaced the visuals of the chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and other VIPs, a section of the crowd started chanting: “Sarbananda Sonowal go back, Himanta Biswa go back.” Later, videos were also uploaded on social media.

Some of the spectators, even shouted “Ho Ho…” while coming out of the stadium, the trademark ‘battlecry’ of All Assam Students Union (AASU) which they are using during the anti-CAA protest. Some of them also shouted “Joi Aai Axom (Hail motherland Assam)”, a slogan used extensively during the anti-CAA protests

Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi, Sonowal, Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BCCI secretary Jay Shah, among others, were present in the stadium.

Police and Assam Cricket Association (ACA) officials, however, were confident that the ongoing Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) would not affect the match. They had made unprecedented security arrangements to check any kind of untoward incident but the slogan shouting reflected the resentment over the CAA.

The spectators vented their anger with slogans.

Earlier in the day, there was a huge rally by AASU and artistes on the streets of Guwahati against the new law.
