The Congress in Assam has decided to prepare a vision for the state within July besides going for a major overhaul of the party unit with an eye on the 2026 Assembly elections.

has decided to move forward from the “politics” it did in the recent past and instead “concentrate” on developing a vision for the state and strengthen the party structure in the run-up to the next state polls “irrespective” of the success or failure of the party in the three-phase Lok Sabha polls in the state, ending May 7.

Responding to a question about the future of the Opposition alliance, Borah said the state unit was taking steps to strengthen itself and further connect with the people of the state.

“As such, we are organising four seminars in four important places by July on the problems of the tea industry, on problems faced by the agriculture, irrigation and veterinary sectors, on issues of teachers and government employees and issues related to the industry,” he said.

“We will come up with solutions to improve these sectors to generate employment and build a vision for the state before the 2026 Assembly poll. These are our goals now, irrespective of the success and failure in the Lok Sabha poll,” Borah said.

The Congress contested 13 of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state while leaving the remaining seat to its ally the Assam Jatiya Parishad.

Though ground reports suggest the Congress vote share will increase, there is no certainty about the seats it will win.

In 2019, it had won three seats. This time the figure could be anywhere between one to four, an observer said.

Borah further said a major overhaul of the state unit is also in the pipeline to strengthen the state unit.

Observers said the most important thing the Congress needed was to be seen as a “single and combative unit”, which was visible in the Lok Sabha poll, but more needs to be done on this front besides further “toning” up its media and publicity wings.
