The Congress in Assam has decided to reach out to at least five lakh serving or retired teachers at their homes on September 5 as a special outreach initiative on Teachers’ Day.

This was disclosed by Assam PCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah in a Facebook post on Sunday where he
said party members, leaders, current and former MLAs, MPs, all frontal, cell, and
departmental heads have
been requested to visit the
residence of any teacher in their locality on Teachers’ Day.

Borah said: “We plan to visit the house of at least five lakh teachers, pay our obeisance, felicitate them, enquire about their condition, know about the current political situation, know their suggestions for our party and also seek their blessings.”

“But above all, our main objective is to meet them, assure them we are committed to the improvement of the education system and the welfare of our teachers who have had/ will have an important role to play in our lives. This outreach is an acknowledgement of their role in our lives,” he told The Telegraph.

The PCC president also said party members and leaders have been requested to upload photographs/videos of their interaction with “our esteemed teachers” on social media platforms.

Party insiders said teachers play an influential lot in society and play an important role in shaping the views of the general public on issues plaguing them or the country.

Reaching out to them is a welcome initiative and
will stand the party in good stead before the upcoming elections, especially in the run-up to the panchayat polls this year and the Assembly poll in 2026.

They also said that after the positive impact of the Bharat Jodo Yatra and the subsequent Bharat Jodo
Nyay Yatra, the party believes direct engagement with the common public is more beneficial than any outreach through the legacy media and publicity blitz.

The state PCC itself had conducted several region-specific yatras in the state run-up to the general election.

In his Facebook post, Borah said: “Each year, Teacher’s Day, is celebrated on the 5th of September, the birthday of the great teacher & philosopher Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, to honour all our Shiksha Gurus. This year We have initiated a new programme at APCC called “Guru Pranam Abhiyan”.

“Accordingly, all MPs, MLAs and all office bearers of APCC, DCC, BCC, MCC, booth, frontal, cells, departments have been asked to make a visit to at least one of their former/serving teachers to pay their obeisance....”
