Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal paid a visit to the families of martyrs Sunil Kalita, a CRPF CoBRA soldier, at Palara village in Kamrup district and CRPF assistant sub-inspector Nirod Sharma at Dahkaunia in Nalbari district on Thursday.
Kalita was injured in a Maoist attack in Jharkhand in May and passed away on June 13.
Sonowal paid tribute to the martyr and handed over a condolence letter from BJP president Amit Shah and a cheque for Rs 20 lakh to Kalita’s wife Padumi.
He also assured Padumi of a job.
Kalita’s sister Lalita later told this correspondent that were recently defrauded by a woman who had promised the family a job at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Rangia at an “office charge” of Rs 15,000.
After they had transferred the money to a bank account given by her, she absconded.
The family lodged an FIR at Kamalpur police station on June 24.
Kamrup deputy superintendent of police Kalyan Pathak said they are investigating the matter and will arrest the woman soon.
Sonowal also paid tribute to Sharma, who was martyred in an encounter with militants in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir.
He offered his condolences to Sharma’s family members and handed over a cheque for Rs 20 lakh and a condolence message from Shah.
Attending Sharma’s adyashradha, Sonowal said the martyr’s sacrifice would continue to inspire the young generation and motivate them to work for nation-building.
He released a souvenir to commemorate the life and works of the martyr.
State irrigation minister Bhabesh Kalita, among others, accompanied Sonowal.
MLAs Angoorlata Deka, Rituparna Baruah, Ashok Sharma and Maneswar Brahma, Assam Tourism Development Corporation vice-chairman Nabadeep Kalita and Nalbari deputy commissioner B.B. Dev Choudhury also accompanied Sonowal on the occasion.
