Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday evening announced a time-bound probe into the death of a 24-year-old within hours of being questioned by the police in connection with the December 14 grenade blast carried out by the proscribed Ulfa(I) near an army camp in Jorhat.
“The Government of Assam will institute an additional chief secretary-level inquiry into the death of Mr. Dipankar Gogoi, son of Mr. Khagen Gogoi, from GariKuri Brinasayak Gaon, Titabar on 26/12/23. The inquiry will be concluded within 30 days,” Sarma posted on X.
This is the second probe to have been ordered into the alleged suicide by Dipenkar Gogoi, whose body was found hanging by a tree inside the family tea garden located behind their residence in a Titabar village on Tuesday morning.
Gogoi, a former Ulfa(I) member, was dropped by the police at his Titabar residence between 9 and 10 pm on Monday following his questioning at Jorhat for his alleged link with the proscribed outfit trying to establish a “sovereign, socialist Assam” .
His family members told the media on Tuesday that the deceased had told them that he was “not” being able to cope up with the “torture” in police custody.
Within hours of the police role coming under the scanner on Tuesday, Assam police chief GP Singh ordered an inquiry by an IGP-level officer.
Police have intensified action against Ulfa(I) members/operatives/ linkman after the outfit carried out three blasts near the Army camp on November 22 in Tinsukia, December 9 in Sivasagar district and December 14 in Jorhat. None was injured.
