Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass on Sunday said his weeklong Upper Assam visit had convinced him that the ruling party and its alliance partners will create history by winning over 100 seats in the 2021 Assembly election.

In the backdrop of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests, which were more intense in the Upper Assam districts, Dass began his journey on February 16, holding one meeting after another with workers in different constituencies to boost their morale.

As the anti-CAA protests raged in the Brahmaputra Valley since December last year, the BJP witnessed many of its workers and leaders deserting the party. Party leaders had taken an aggressive role and held rallies one after another to keep the morale of workers high.

Dass held organisational meetings at Titabar and Mariani in Jorhat district, Nazira and Sivasagar in Sivasagar district and Doomdooma, Chabua and Lahowal in Dibrugarh district. The tour ended with a Sankalp Samaroh (resolution rally) at Khanikar in Dibrugarh district.

“After travelling 1,700km during these seven days and analysing the party’s organisational activities, I am convinced the BJP and its alliance partners will create history by winning over 100 seats in 2021,” he said.

The BJP’s 100-plus mission has been described by the Opposition Congress as “unrealistic”.

Dass’s journey was not always smooth. He faced black flags from the members of the All Assam Students’ Union at Titabar and Chabua.

Das thanked the party workers for their “active support” during his tour. “Our party workers should keep their enthusiasm till 2021 so that the Congress, which is an expert in creating confusion, and other opponents cannot take advantage,” he said.

On Sunday, Dass said anti-CAA protests were nothing but a sentiment flared up by the Opposition who are worried at the BJP’s “success” at executing 70 per cent of its promises. “They are worried the BJP will complete the remaining 30 per cent promises in six months. That is why they are making the Assamese people emotional,” he said.
