An Assam BJP district unit on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his “immediate intervention” in ensuring the safety and security of minority Hindus living in strife-hit Bangladesh following the mass uprising that led to the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister on Monday.
In the two-page memorandum, the Karimganj district unit of the ruling BJP has drawn the attention of Modi towards the gravity of the emergent situation in the neighbouring country and ensure the protection of Bangladeshi Hindu families and their properties besides beefing up security along the Indo-Bangla border in Karimganj district.
Karimganj district is one of the three Assam districts that share border with Bangladesh and it also has flourishing border trade with the neighbouring country through the Sutarkandi Land Port.
The total length of the border in Karimganj is 92km of which maximum portion is fenced.
The memorandum was signed by Karimganj BJP district president Subrata Bhattacharjee and 12 other persons and submitted to Modi through the deputy commissioner on Tuesday afternoon.
