Former two-time Prime Minister and Rajya Sabha MP from Assam Manmohan Singh will be here on a four-hour trip, along with his wife, to cast his vote at a polling station in Dispur on Tuesday.

Singh will reach LGBI Airport around 2pm on Tuesday from where he will proceed to Dispur Government Higher Secondary School polling station and then to his rented house in Sarumotoria for a short visit before taking the 6pm flight back to New Delhi, PCC office-bearers told The Telegraph.

PCC general secretary Diganta Choudhury said, “His visit will motivate others to come out to exercise their franchise. PCC president Ripun Bora, Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia and a host of other senior leaders will receive him at the airport, accompany him to the polling booth and also see him off.”

Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur are “residents” of Guwahati since 1990 and registered as voters here by virtue of having taken on rent a house of the family of former Assam chief minister Hiteswar Saikia, father of Debabrata Saikia.

Saikia said Singh, after casting his vote around 3pm, will take rest for some time at the house before flying back in the evening. The house, which remains locked, has been spruced up in view of the VVIP’s visit, he added.

Singh was first elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam in 1991 and was re-elected in 1995, 2001, 2007 and 2013. His current term will expire in June this year.

For the first time he voted here was in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, but skipped voting in the 2011 Assembly polls.

After drawing flak from the Opposition and the media for not voting in the 2011 Assembly polls despite being a Rajya Sabha MP from the state and the Prime Minister of the country, Singh and his wife came here to vote in the 2014 parliamentary polls.

The last time the former Prime Minister voted here was on April 11, 2016, in the Assembly polls. He was not accompanied by his wife then.

This will be the fourth time Singh will cast his vote here.
