Assam Agricultural University (AAU) has developed new varieties of mustard greens and chilli, a breakthrough expected to increase yields.
The two mustard greens varieties, locally called lai xaak, have been named Laika and Kajoli, and the chilli variety, Prabalee.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has described the development as an “agricultural breakthrough” by AAU.
The three new varieties of crops “will aid our farmers” with increased production and shorter crop cycle, thereby boosting their income, Sarma said.
Dr Utpal Kotoky, head of the department of horticulture, AAU, told The Telegraph that growers of the two mustard greens “will get around 30 per cent more yield” than those growing the traditional varieties.
