Arunachal: Rebels surrender before Pema Khandu

Officials say militants surrender with arms and ammunition during a homecoming ceremony organised at police headquarters

Fifteen militants of the Eastern Naga National Government (ENNG) along with the outfit chief Tosham Mossang surrendered before Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu on Sunday.

The rebels surrendered with arms and ammunition during a homecoming ceremony organised at police headquarters here, officials said.

Deputy chief minister Chowna Mein, state home minister Bamang Felix along with Assam Rifles officers, state senior civil and police officers were present at the function.

Nine Chinese-made MQ series weapons, two AK-47 rifles, one Chinese-made pistol, 19 magazines, 415 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, five rounds of 9 mm pistol, four Chinese grenades, one under barrel launcher with fins and six walker talkie were deposited during the ceremony, SIT SP Rohit Rajbir Singh said.

Terming the event as “historic”, Khandu lauded the combined offensive and negotiating efforts of Assam Rifles and state police in convincing the cadres to shun violence.

Rs 20cr heroin seized in Assam

Diphu: A huge consignment of heroin worth over Rs 20 crore in the international market was seized on Sunday in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, the police had set up a barricade in the Khatkhati area and intercepted a vehicle coming from Dimapur, said Bokajan sub-divisional police officer John Das.

While searching the vehicle, the police recovered 390 soap boxes containing over five kgs of heroin from a concealed chamber of the vehicle, he said. The driver of the vehicle was arrested in this connection.

The consignment was loaded in Dimapur and was slated to be delivered in Nagaon bypass, Das said. The value of the seized drugs was estimated to be over Rs 20 crore in the international market, he added.
