A police team, led by additional superintendent of police Bidyut Das Boro, recovered an SLR rifle and six rounds of ammunition, a 7.65mm pistol and two rounds of ammunition, a Chinese-made grenade and a walkie-talkie set buried in a forest at Khowang in Assam’s Udalguri district on Monday night. Nobody has been arrested so far in connection with the recovery.

Spear Corps General Officer Commanding Lt Gen. R.P. Kalita called on Arunachal Pradesh governor Brig (retd) B.D. Mishra at the Raj Bhavan in Itanagar on Sunday to discuss the prevailing security situation in the state and along the border areas.

Leopard killed

A leopard was shot dead after it allegedly attacked a man near Bangkai village in Assam’s Dima Hasao district on Monday. Sources said two hunters had gone to a jungle when a leopard attacked one of them. They said the injured man was admitted to Haflong civil hospital.

One hurt in road mishap

Biman Buragohain of Palengi Dhundarmukh, was critically injured when his motorcycle collided with a Tata 407 mini truck of the police on Demow Nitai Road here on Monday. Two other persons who were on the motorcycle fled the scene. After preliminary treatment at Demow Model Hospital, Buragohain was referred to Dibrugarh for treatment.

The 31st Mr Saraighat RG Baruah Memorial All-India Classic Bodybuilding championship and 4th Asomiya Pratidin Mr Saraighat All Assam Classic Body Building Championships will be held at ITA Centre here on April 4.

NPF meet

The central office of the Naga People's Front held a consultative meeting with the NPF’s Manipur unit in Kohima on Monday. The meeting discussed issues confronting the party in Manipur and the proposed postponement of the autonomous district council elections in the hill districts of Manipur.

Three gold

Athlete Sahina Begum bagged three gold medals in different events in a competition organised at Sarusajai stadium of Guwahati on Sunday on International Women’s Day.

Timber seized

The protection force of Goalpara forest division on Monday night seized a van illegally carrying timber valued at Rs 2 lakh at Krishnai in the district.

Vehicle theft

Reports of multiple vehicle thefts were received from Krishnai police station in the past month.

Correction

In the article ‘At 79, living out a saga of tea, love and war’ by Avik Chakraborty in The Telegraph on March 6, the name of Ann Poyser’s father should have read Stuart Vernon Poyser and not as published. Also, Ann Poyser was confidential secretary at Namdang Tea Company Ltd and not adviser. The errors are regretted.

Protest

Thousands hit the streets at Lakhipur town in Assam’s Goalpara district on Monday after the police recovered the decomposed body of a youth, Ajay Shah, from Bhoirovchura hill of Bongaigaon district on Sunday night. Ajay, 24, was the son of businessman Ramesh Shah and abducted from Lakhipur town on February 25. People protested the alleged police inaction in the matter.

Meet on banana market

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda), an apex body under the ministry of commerce and industry and responsible for the export promotion of agricultural products, arranged an awareness-cum-promotion meeting at Goalpara’s Darrangiri for banana and strawberry products on Saturday. The meeting discussed the problems and prospects of the Darrangiri banana market, treated as Asia’s largest banana market. It was a joint collaboration of the state agricultural department and the Goalpara district administration. Paban Kumar Borthakur, the president of Apeda, Rajesh Prasad, principal secretary of agriculture, Varnali Deka, deputy commissioner of Goalpara district and officers from railway and airport authority and marketing experts of several states participated in the meeting.

Three held over youth murder

Duliajan police on Tuesday arrested three persons for allegedly killing a youth. His body was recovered on Monday night near Rotary Club under Duliajan police station in Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district. The victim has been identified as Aditya Hazarika, 20, son of Rajen Gogoi, Sassoni Tokowbill village under Sassoni police beat in the district. Aditya’s brother, Debajit, lodged an FIR on Tuesday morning. The FIR says Aditya went to attend a wedding on Monday on his bike to Tingkhong Salmari. He was accompanied by Jintu Tamuli, a resident of Sassoni Gotong village. Based on complaint, the police apprehended Jintu and two more youths, Dip Gogoi, and Khanin Hazarika.
