A source said a police team from Assam was in Delhi and Sharjeel, a JNU research scholar, was being interrogated by Delhi police and their Assam counterparts. The Assam police team, led by Nabaneet Mahanta, will be bringing him to Assam.

Guwahati police commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta said Imam is being brought to Assam on a remand warrant following the appeal to Patiala House Court. According to rules, he will be produced at the court of the chief judicial magistrate, Kamrup, for further proceedings.

Assam police had asked for his custody after the remand of Delhi police was over on February 7.

Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur police have also registered cases against Sharjeel for alleged inflammatory speeches against the amended citizenship act and proposed National Register of Citizens. In a video, which was widely shared, Sharjeel purportedly said, “We can cut the Northeast from India permanently. If not permanently, then for at least for one-two months. Only when Assam is cut off from India, they (the government) will listen to us.”

Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu had earlier tweeted: “This kind of provocation inciting secession of Assam and other NE states from rest of India, creating communal disharmony, hampering sovereignty and territorial Integrity of India will not be tolerated.”

Manipur police also registered a case under Sections 121, 121A, 124A, 120B and 153 of the IPC.

On Tuesday, Delhi police filed the chargesheet in connection with the case registered with them. The police named 18 people in the chargesheet but none of them were accused of rioting, violence, attacking security personnel and damaging public property but Imam was termed an “instigator”.

The police had filed the case against Imam on January 26.

Imam was arrested on January 28 from Bihar’s Jehanabad.
