The Twipra Student’s Federation (TSF) on Sunday announced that it would organise a six-hour rally and demonstration on Wednesday, demanding the scrapping of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and protesting against the brutal attack by Tripura police and Tripura State Rifles personnel on its members at Dasaram para under Jirania subdivision of West district, around 20km from here, on January 8 last year.

The convener of the TSF and North East Students’ Organisation (Neso) vice-chairman Upendra Debbarma told The Telegraph, “We are going to organise our protest against CAA and against the brutal attacks by the police and TSR personnel who shot at our members on January 8 last year when they were protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the Northeast as a part of the Neso programme.”

On that day last year, the Neso, an umbrella organisation comprising the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Meghalaya-based Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and Garo Students’ Union GSU), All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), Naga Students’ Federation, All Manipur Students’ Union (Amsu), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) and TSF, had called the strike from 5am till 4pm, opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

At least six TSF supporters were injured at Madhav Bari in Jirania subdivision, around 15km from here, when police and TSR personnel resorted to a baton charge and fired to disperse activists who blocked National Highway 8.

“Six persons were injured. Some of them sustained bullet injuries. A TSR jawan was also injured. The injured have been admitted to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala,” an officer had said.

“We had organised an agitation the same day this year. We are not going to bring up the NRC in the protest, we will only protest against CAA and the day when our members were shot at. We had police permission for the event but they brutally attacked us. After the police firing, some police officials were suspended, but we are not satisfied. We are demanding a judicial inquiry. On Saturday, we held a meeting and decided to hold the protest,” Debbarma told this correspondent.

He added that the indigenous people of the state are not going to accept the CAA.

“We, the TSF and the indigenous people, are not ready to accept CAA. We condemn this act. We are hoping more than 10,000 people will support us in this protest rally and other social and political organisations will also join us,” Debbarma said.
