Protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) continued in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district on Thursday as various organisations, civil society groups and cultural activists took out rallies.

Thousands joined a cultural procession against CAA at Ritu Kathalguri under Margherita subdivision and at Porkhito park here demanding repeal of the “contentious” Act. The protests were supported by 30 indigenous organisations.

Terming the act “unconstitutional” and “anti-Assam”, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) president Surojit Moran said: “The people of Assam will not accept CAA at any cost, as it was a big threat to Assamese culture and language.”

Pointing to the protesters, Moran said, “All the people at protest sites are waving gamosas. It indicates how much love and passion they have for our culture, tradition and language.”

At Barekuri, All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “The agitation against CAA has spread to every nook and corner of Assam. These protests are people-oriented. Despite many conspiracies, the protests have continued.”

He said the protests will continue until the “government scraps CAA and the sons of the soil are able to secure their jati (community), mati (land) and bheti (mainstay)”.

The protest was organised at Bargaon Mahila Samiti playground by the Barekuri Yuba Sangh and saw active participation of a number of organisations and scores of locals.

On Saturday, a gana garjan (people’s roar) against CAA will be organised in Kakopathar, around 17km from here.
