A city-based anti-CAA civil society organisation on Tuesday announced a “big protest meeting” by members of social and political organisations from Assam against the contentious central law here on February 17. It said that “a united, peaceful and appropriate resistance” is the only way to compel the Centre to revisit the law.
While announcing the protest, the Coordination Committee Against Citizenship Amendment Act (CCACAC) cited the farmers' protest against the three farm laws as a “good example” of how a “united, peaceful and sustained protest” forced the Centre to roll back the three farm legislations in 2021.
The example of the farmers protest was flagged because there is a feeling among certain quarters in the state that protests will not work because the law has been passed and notified.
CCACAC president and social scientist Hiren Gohain said in Guwahati, “We are planning a big rally of workers from different political and social organisations against the CAA on February 17 from 11 in the morning at the NCP field here. At least 500 are attending. A big event from any angle.”
