Gauhati University (GU), Cotton University (CU) and Dibrugarh University (DU) on Wednesday postponed all their examinations, scheduled to be held till December 16, owing to the protests by various organisations and students against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

While exams of GU and its colleges and CU have been postponed till December 16, the DU authority put off theirs till December 14.

The CU students boycotted the exams of postgraduate third semester, undergraduate first semester and higher secondary second year pre-final scheduled to be held on Wednesday. The agitating students marched towards Dispur and held a sit-in on the road in protest against the bill.

Various exams at GU and CU, scheduled to be held on Tuesday, were also postponed because of the strike called by various organisations.

The GU students also organised a rally from the campus to the nearby National Highways 17 and 27 and blocked the Jalukbari flyover for over 30 minutes.

“All examinations of MA, MSc, MBA, LLM, MTech, BA, BSc, BCom, BE, BTech, LLB, BA LLB and MCom courses, scheduled up to December 16, have been postponed owing to unavoidable reasons. The rescheduled dates will be notified separately,” said the GU notification, signed by the controller of examination, on Wednesday.

Around 350 colleges under GU and about 3 lakh students will be affected by the postponement of exams.

GU vice-chancellor Pratap Jyoti Handique said the exams were postponed following the students’ appeal.

“This is for information of all concerned that due to unavoidable circumstances all examinations of Dibrugarh University, scheduled to be held on December 12, 13 and 14, have been postponed. Fresh dates for the postponed examinations will be notified soon,” said the DU notification, signed by the controller of examination.

“Due to unavoidable circumstances, the undergraduate third, undergraduate first, postgraduate third, postgraduate first semester and higher secondary second year pre-final examinations, scheduled to be held from December 11 to 14, have been postponed until further notice. It is also hereby informed that the rest of the examinations shall be held as per schedule from December 16,” said the notification, signed by the controller of examination at Cotton University.

“All students of the university support the rescheduling of exams,” a CU student said.

Over 15 boarders of GU on Monday slit their wrists with shaving blades on the campus in protest against the bill. The students wrote slogans in Assamese with their blood on placards.
