Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi has again been sent to 14-day judicial custody on Monday by the court of chief judicial magistrate, Sivasagar.

Akhil was taken to Sivasagar earlier on Thursday by a police team after he was rearrested in a Sivasagar police station case (number 1344/2019) under Sections 120(B), 143, 150, 153, 153(A), 157, 158, 183, 188, 291 and 431 of the IPC.

He was granted bail on Tuesday by the special NIA court, three months after he was arrested for his alleged role in anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests and for alleged links with Maoists.

He was later rearrested in a similar case by Sivasagar police.

Akhil’s counsel Santanu Borthakur said he was sent to judicial custody by the CJM court in Sivasagar but further proceedings on his bail in the cases lodged in Guwahati are yet to be considered.

The KMSS leader has been under judicial custody since December 27 under allegations that he has links with Maoists. However, since March 19, he was in four-day custody with Sivasagar police.

He was first arrested by Assam police on December 12.

On December 17, he was handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which arrested him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Akhil has been facing severe health issues and undergoing medical check-ups inside the jail.

Several political leaders and social activists have demanded his release, including Ulfa leader Anup Chetia who claimed that even murder accused were allowed to come out of jail on bail, but Akhil was still being kept in jail despite there being proper evidence.

Chetia said keeping Akhil locked was a violation of his fundamental rights.

He added that the government should take initiative to release Akhil from jail as soon as possible.
