Several leaders resigned from the AGP on Wednesday following the party’s decision to go with the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls.

Senior leader Lachit Bordoloi sent his resignation letter to party president Atul Bora. Another senior leader and party’s legal advisor Hemen Borah, too, has stepped down.

“In the past, the party had committed several mistakes but the people of Assam have embraced them again. But things are turning worse owing to the AGP’s poor leadership. It has reflected in the results of the last panchayat elections and the decision to go with the BJP for the Lok Sabha polls. The party has lost its way,” said Bordoloi, who had joined the party in 2011.

The AGP, which has been opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, broke away from the BJP in January after they pushed the bill in the Lok Sabha.

Borah said he has already been away from the party and its activities for quite some time but after the alliance, he decided to quit the party.

Several grassroots leaders and workers across Assam have also stepped down from the party’s primary membership.

They alleged that the party leadership has never informed them about its intention of going with the BJP again.

“We oppose the bill and the BJP supports it. BJP president Amit Shah said they will bring the bill back if they come to power again. It is shocking to see Bora and several other leaders shaking hands with the BJP for power and money. They are against the people of Assam,” a party worker said.

Last month, party spokesperson Dilip Borah and another leader, Divas Phukan, too, stepped down after they learnt about the party’s motive.
