Popular Tollywood actress and star campaigner of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamul Congress (TMC) Nusrat Jahan on Friday took part in a road show in Dhubri town to campaign for Nurul Islam Choudhary, who is contesting from Assam’s Dhubri Lok Sabha seat.
The road show started from Dhubri stadium here at noon and ended at Samrat Hotel at 1pm.
Despite the scorching heat, local residents lined up on either side of the road to welcome the actress.
In Dhubri for the first time, Nusrat got a rousing reception at the stadium where she landed in a helicopter.
TMC supporters garlanded her and raised slogans in support of the candidate and the party.
Overwhelmed at the response, Nusrat, who was riding in an open jeep and accompanied by TMC Rajya Sabha member Shantanu Sen, urged the people to vote for her party candidate during her hour-long road show.
She also addressed an election meeting at Belguri in the district and claimed that no development had taken place in Dhubri.
She urged them to work unitedly and adopt the Trinamul Congress ideology of Maa, Mati, Manush (mother, land and man) and other programmes in every household.
Nusrat is one of the most glamorous actresses in the Bengali film industry and enjoys a massive fan base in the state and among Bengali-speaking movie goers.
She is also contesting the general elections from the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat of Bengal bordering Bangladesh.
On April 5, TMC chief Mamata Benerjee also participated in an election campaign and sought votes for the Dhubri candidate during a rally at Dhubri Stadium.
Choudhary, a lawyer by profession, is a first-time candidate in the constituency.
TMC is fielding candidates in 11 seats of the Northeast, of which nine are from Assam.
Sitting MP and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal and Congress candidate Abu Taher Bepari are Choudhary’s opponents for the April 23 polls.
During the last general elections in 2014, Trinamul Congress candidate Zesmina Khatun contested the elections from the Dhubri seat and got 7,874 votes of the 13,69,624 valid votes.
