A seven-year-old boy from Mizoram’s Kolasib town on Tuesday donated all his savings to fight the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Rommel Lalmuansanga, a resident of Kolasib’s Venglai neighbourhood donated Rs 333 to Venglai village-level task force on Covid-19 to fight the deadly virus and in aid of the families which face a food shortage, local leader Zomuanpuia Tlau said.

He said Rommei had damaged his piggybank in which he saved coins and notes of lower denomination. He brought a tiny plastic package with Rs 333 in coins and cash to the village-level task force and handed it over to the leaders to fight the pandemic and assist the poor, Tlau said.

Rommel’s act has been praised by many, including chief minister Zoramthanga, who took to Twitter praising the boy for his noble deeds.

“This tiny bundle contains Rs 333 in cash and coins; 7-year-old Rommel Lalmua-nsanga from Kolasib Venglai donated his entire savings to his village-level task force in this war against the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic,” the chief minister tweeted.

He wished the boy be blessed by God for his exemplary act. “You are a Hero,” Zoramthanga added.

Meanwhile, help continued to pour in for the Mizoram government from various sources to fight the rapidly increasing coronavirus.

Official sources said over Rs 73.18 lakh has been donated by at least seven individuals, eight churches, 23 organisations and two private enterprises towards the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) to fight the virus till Tuesday.

Apart from this, lakh of rupees have also been donated to the health department to fight the virus, the sources said.

Mizoram’s lone Lok Sabha member C. Lalrosanga on Tuesday donated Rs 1 crore for the purchase of personal protective masks and sanitisers, test kits, ventilators and infrared thermometers.

Earlier, the MP had donated Rs 15 lakh towards (CMRF).

Mizoram home guards and civil defence also donated Rs 2 lakh to the CMRF on Tuesday.

The state government on Tuesday constituted five new task forces to deal with matters related to coronavirus.

The task force on medicine and medical equipments will be headed by health secretary H. Lalengmawia as chairman while the task force on migrant workers and stranded travellers will be headed by home additional secretary Laldawngliana.

The other task forces are transport, headed by department commissioner and secretary K.T. Beichho, insurance headed by finance department secretary Ramchuana and task force on animal husbandry and veterinary services and fisheries to be headed by department secretary C. Lalpeksanga.
