Police have picked up six persons from different parts of Hailakandi town in connection with ATM theft in the last 24 hours.
The superintendent of police, Hailakandi, Pabindra Kumar Nath, confirmed arrests of four persons out of the six.
Nearly Rs 84 lakh was taken away by them from three ATMs of the State Bank of India on Saturday.
Monisena Singha, an official of the service provider, has been arrested.
Police sources said after Singha’s arrest, the service provider temporarily stopped work but later agreed to resume operations.
According to the police, CCTVs were not working at the SBI ATMs. An investigation has started.
In a separate incident on Saturday, a carton containing huge quantities of illicit Yaba tablets were seized by district police during a search operation in connection with a burglary case around 3.30pm.
Nath said the carton containing 11,075 Yaba tablets, known as “crazy medicines”, were recovered from the house of Abidur Rehman Laskar, 24, of Choratikor village Rangauti Pt-I under Hailakandi police station.
