Three policemen, including a sub-inspector, have been suspended after a cadre of a militant outfit was found dead in a lock-up in Manipur’s Kangpoki district, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.
A mob stormed Kangpoki police station on Wednesday after the death in lock-up of Thangbour Lhouvum, a cadre of the Kuki Revolutionary Army which is in suspension of operations with the Centre and the state government. The residents also blocked the Imphal-Dimapur stretch of National Highway 2. No untoward incident was reported.
“Two constables and a sub-inspector have been suspended,” said Kangpokpi superintendent of police Hemant Pandey. He said an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh would be given to Lhouvum’s wife. Lhouvum, arrested on January 25 by the Assam Rifles from Toribari and handed over to the police, was found dead on Tuesday.
Various organisations had demanded suspension of police personnel responsible for Lhouvum’s death, a judicial inquiry, Rs 5 lakh compensation, relief and rehabilitation for his three children and a grade IV job for his wife.
