Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday ordered the immediate suspension of three senior police officers of Darrang district for their alleged mishandling in a case of a teenager's unnatural death.

The chief minister also directed the DGP to constitute a three-member special investigation team (SIT) to probe the death of the girl from Dhekiajuli working at the residence of a SSB jawan Krishna Kamal Baruah at Dhula.

The girl was found hanging at Baruah’s residence on June 11. She was “working" there for the past two years. The suspended officers included the Darrang district SP Rajmohan Ray, additional SP Rupam Phukan and the Dhula police station officer in-charge.

The twin developments followed Sarma’s visit to the residence of the girl earlier in the day accompanied by state DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and his interaction with the relatives of the deceased. An official statement said the Darrang police has been accused of displaying “extreme dereliction of duty in collecting of photographic and videographic evidence” in connection with the case.

“It has been further alleged that the Dhula Police Station Officer in-charge had put pressure on the family members of the deceased to not file a written complaint on the unnatural death. Considering the gravity of the above allegations, the Chief Minister asked the DGP to constitute a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) for a thorough investigation,” the statement said. Two of the three members of the SIT shall be women, as per the chief minister’s order. Sarma has also directed district officials to get a house constructed for the family of the girl under a government scheme and for the inclusion of the deceased’s family in the Orunodoi scheme, the state government’s flagship programme for the poor. The beneficiaries get Rs 1,000 a month under the scheme.
