A batch of 27 pilgrims from Baksa and Dhubri districts of Assam are stranded at Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh amid the 21-day nationwide lockdown to prevent coronavirus pandemic.

The pilgrims, comprising 20 women, six men and a nine-year-old child, are facing cash crunch and told this correspondent that they were currently staying at an ashram in Chaukhandi Kydganj locality near Triveni Sangam.

According to Kusum Kumar Das, one of the pilgrims, the group embarked on a journey on March 15 to visit Vrindavan, Gaya, Mathura and some other sites of religious significance.

Their train tickets were cancelled because of nationwide lockdown, forcing them to stay in two rooms of the ashram.“We are running out of cash and some of us are not keeping well. We are in an unforeseen situation and surviving on rice and cereal. A priest gave us cooking gas,” Srimati Deka, a pilgrim, said.

They have informed chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma about their plight.
