2000 anti-CAA protesters gather in Golaghat

A protest was organised by the All Golaghat District Students’ Union (AGDSU), a district branch of AASU, Asam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and other 30 ethnic organisations to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at Kuralguri Chariali in Golaghat district on Sunday.

Altogether 2,000 people took part in the protest which started with the popular song of Bhupen Hazarika Aah O aah, ulai aah....’ where the speakers explained the negative aspects of the Act.

The Pandit Hemchandra Goswami (PHCG) Path was blocked to traffic for about three hours because of the protest.

Addressing the gathering, the president of Golaghat district unit of the AJYCP, Abdul Kasim, urged the people to continue with the protests against CAA in a democratic manner. “We will be intensify our non-violent protest till CAA is scrapped,” he said.

The assistant general secretary of AASU and the adviser to AGDSU, Monower Hussain, said the government had done injustice to the historic Assam Accord and also the people of Assam.

“So, we will never forgive the government,” he said.

He also urged the gathering to give a lesson to the sitting Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia for his alleged provocative speech.

The gathering was also addressed by AASU leaders Abhibartan Goswami, Mridul Saikia, journalist Dwipen Dutta among others.

Artiste Neel Aakash urged the gathering to be united against CAA. He sang O mur apunar dex...’ to the delight of the gathering.
