Meghalaya police in East Khasi Hills have arrested two Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) members over their alleged role in a series of stabbings at Ïewduh on February 29. The arrested activists have been identified as Melajied Khongbuh, publicity secretary of KSU Jaiaw circle, and Laldin Nongkynrih, a KSU member of Mawkhar circle.
In a statement on Tuesday, East Khasi Hills superintendent of police Claudia A. Lyngwa said following a series of stabbings by unknown persons in Ïewduh on February 29 in retaliation to the death of Lurshai Hynñiewta at Ichamati, where one person, Rupchand Dewan, succumbed to his injuries and six others were grievously injured, the police had left no stone unturned in meticulously collecting evidence and statements from eyewitnesses.
During the past three weeks, Lyngwa said police were able to collate all the evidences to identify the perpetrators of this crime.
On Monday, police arrested one person who also confessed to have committed this crime along with three others accomplices.
Based on his confession, she said the second accused was also arrested and the police are on the lookout for the remaining two who have been identified and will be arrested shortly.
Hynñiewta, who hailed from Sohra, died of his injuries on February 28 following a clash with a group at Ichamati. The clash took place after an anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act meeting called by the union.
