2 held over fake birth certificates in Dibrugarh

Two persons were arrested in Dibrugarh district of Assam on Thursday for allegedly “selling” birth certificates to labourers of some tea gardens.

A police source said the two, identified as Dhanu Modi and Krishna Modi, were arrested by Tingkhong police based on complaints by some residents of Ouguri Kapahua that they were selling fake birth certificates.

The duo, suspected to be involved in a racket of fake certificates, allegedly charged Rs 1,200 per certificate. The “buyers” were mostly labourers of the tea gardens whom these two were duping for money. The certificates were allegedly sold to the labourers capitalising on their fears about the NRC and the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The police have booked the two under Sections 420, 466, 468, 471 and 34 of the IPC and begun an investigation. The police are also investigating whether a few other people are involved in the racket.

Drugs seized: Nagaon police on Thursday seized drugs, including brown sugar, valued at Rs 2 crore, from the residence of one Mujibur Rahman at Barbheti. However, Mujibur managed to escape.
