13 held for smuggling drugs in Tripura

Tripura police, BSF and DRI seized contraband valued at Rs 30 lakh and Rs 68,000 cash

Tripura police, BSF and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence arrested 13 persons and seized contraband valued at Rs 30 lakh and Rs 68,000 cash in three separate incidents on Monday and Tuesday.

Bishalghar sub-divisional police officer Uttam Banik said, “We conducted raids at two different places at Bishalghar sub-division in Sepahijala district today and seized Rs 68,000 cash, 23 brown sugar-filled vials, 121 empty vials and six mobile phones from six persons identified as Mintu Banik, 35, Arup Das, 31, Jhutan Das, 28, Rakesh Das, 32, Narayan Das, 20, and Sanjay Sutradhar, 18.”

“They will be produced in court tomorrow,” the official added.

On Monday, six persons were arrested for smuggling 35kg cannabis valued at Rs 5 lakh from Ranir Bazar area, 10km from here.

A local court here sent them to three-day judicial custody on Tuesday.

In another incident, BSF personnel in South Tripura district launched a special operation in the border areas and seized 4,000 Yaba tablets, valued at Rs 20 lakh, wrapped in a polythene packet.

The smugglers, however, fled the spot towards the India side taking advantage of darkness and thick vegetation.

In yet another incident, a joint team of BSF troops deployed at the border outpost Rayermura, along with Directorate of Revenue Intelligence personnel, seized 2,500 bottles of Phensedyl, valued at Rs 3.85 lakh, from a truck that was parked on the Amtali-Jiraniya Bypass Road, around 15km from here, on the wee hours on Tuesday.

The truck was seized and its co-driver arrested.

“During the search, the co-driver, Shabir Khan, 40, of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, was found asleep inside the truck. The vehicle was loaded with potato bags. While unloading the potato bags, the bottles of Phensedyl were found. The seized drugs along with the apprehended person were handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence Agartala,” a BSF news release said.

BSF troops deployed on the Indo-Bangladesh border also succeeded in seizing other miscellaneous items having a combined market value of Rs 1.85 lakh on Tuesday.
