Lakhi Paul, at first instance, may seem like any other centenarian but she has secured for herself an indelible mark in the annals of Charaideo’s history.

At 104, Lakhi is oldest voter in Charaideo and she is all set to vote in the Lok Sabha elections in April. She has three children — two sons and a daughter. She stays with one of her sons and daughter at Moran Town, Ward No. 4.

In an effort to make the elections inclusive and provide all possible aid to voters, the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation Program (SVEEP) cell of Charaideo tried tracking all centenarian voters and came across Lakhi, who is older than Independent India’s first voter, Shyam Saran Negi, 102.

“This is a history of sorts for us as we have tracked down the district’s oldest voter, aged 104 years. But what makes her more special is that she is two years older than Independent India’s first voter,” said Nuzhat Nasreen, nodal officer, SVEEP, Charaideo.

On Saturday, a team of the district administration, headed by Charaideo deputy commissioner Dipak Kumar Handique, paid Lakhi a visit. The team included Charaideo assistant commissioner Phyllis Hrangchal.

Handique felicitated Lakhi with a gamosa and offered her fruits. He enquired about her health and congratulated her on being the district’s oldest voter. He said the district administration will provide all possible help in terms of transportation and escort, if needed, on the polling day (April 11) to Lakhi.

He asked Mahmora circle officer Tanvi Ahmed to take Lakhi to the polling station.

Sitting on her bed with a stick beside her, Lakhi acknowledged the district administration’s effort with a nod and folded hands.

At 104, Lakhi has developed hearing problems which made the conversation a bit difficult.

However, on being asked by her daughter Madhu whether she would cast her vote this year, she nodded positively.

Lakhi’s name is enlisted at No. 40 polling station under 105 Mahmora Assembly constituency under Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency.
