Looking to keep your Valentine’s celebration low-key with movie-night? Switch up the cheesy rom-com for a cutesy animated flick to make it an evening worth remembering. Confused about what to watch? Peruse through My Kolkata’s animated V-Day watchlist:
- Shrek: This 2001 film about a lonesome orge who falls in love with a beautiful princess. While Shrek and Fiona have become one of pop culture’s favourite couples over the years, the first film is where it all started!
- Tangled: Loosely based on the classic story, Rapunzel, this film tells the story of an innocent girl who is locked up by her overprotective mother (read, a witch), but dreams to explore the outside world. Her life changes when she meets a good-hearted thief, and she finally discovers the joys of feeling butterflies in your stomach.
- Up: Love goes beyond time and physical proximity, as is reinforced by this classic about an old widower, who sets off on an adventure with a boy scout in his flying house, to pay homage to his late wife. Be ready with a box of tissues though, this one tugs on the heartstrings.
- The Emoji Movie: The perfect watch for all millennial couples out there, this film uses emojis to personify questions about identity. Beneath its hilarious parody of the hyper-social world we live in, lies a warm message about accepting oneself.
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: While the first film is a forever classic, the second one is more appropriate for Valentine’s Day. Miles and Gwen’s teenage romance comes into its own in this film, reminding everyone of the nervous rush of hormones and the joy of finding someone just as weird as you.
