Starting Poila Baisakh with classic Bengali comedy films – now that’s what we call a perfect plan! If you are having a cosy, lazy day at home, indulging in a festive fare and family time, here are five film recommendations that will make your day:
- Mouchak (9174): A tale of an eligible bachelor whose tryst with bypassing marriage proposals and then finding it a task to finally get married to his lady love is an incredibly fun watch. Starring Uttam Kumar, Sabitri Chatterjee, Ranjit Mallick and Mithu Mukherjee along with Rabi Ghosh, Anup Kumar and Chinmoy Roy, Mouchak never fails to delight

- Ogo Badhu Sundari (1981): It’s a laugh riot! Uttam Kumar, Sumitra Mukherjee, Moushumi Chatterjee and Ranjit Mallick coming together in a film about a couple, who are poles apart and that’s what makes their ‘it’ factor.’ Also, you just can’t miss the real star of the film, Abalakanta, essayed by the late Santosh Dutta. It was also one of the last films of matinee idol Uttam Kumar, who passed away before its shooting got over.

- Basanta Bilap (1973): Boys vs. girls, girls hostel vs. boys mess, Soumitra Chatterjee vs. Aparna Sen and the inimitable song ‘Ami Miss Calcutta’ — can this film ever get old? Plus, Rabi Ghosh, Kajal Gupta, Sumitra Mukherjee, Anup Kumar, Chinmoy Roy, Gita Dey also in the cast…need we ask for more?

- Shriman Prithviraj (1973): What happens when a young brat tries to slip into the shoes of Prithviraj Chauhan and instead lands in a soup by having a spat with his friend, getting married and also getting in the midst of a family feud?

- Chhadmabeshi (1971): Did you know Chupke Chupke is the Hindi remake of Chhadmabeshi? The hilarious tale of a Botany professor who plans a practical joke on his wife’s brother posing as a driver makes for a back-to-back Tolly and Bolly watch, just to marvel at the acting prowess of Uttam Kumar, Madhabi Mukherjee, Bikash Roy, Subhendu Chatterjee as well as Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore, Om Prakash, Jaya Bachchan and Lily Chatterjee.
