From Cannes 2024 to theatres, ‘Manthan’ to re-release in India soon
The iconic film was directed by Shyam Benegal and starred Nasiruddin Shah and late Smita Patil among other noted actors

Manthan, one of the most popular films by director Shyam Benegal, is set to release in theatres across India. The film that released in 1976 and had the late Smital Patil along with Nasiruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Mohan Agashe, Amrish Puri and Anant Nag along with others in the cast, was based on the milk cooperative movement by Verghese Kurien.
Manthan was recently screened at the Cannes Film Festival, 2024. Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil’s son Prateik Patil Babbar along with several other actors attended the screening. The film is based on the White Revolution in India, and is the first crowdfunded film of India, done with the support of the Indian dairy farmers.
“...Let us celebrate the tale of the White Revolution in India and honor the remarkable journey of our 3.6 million women dairy farmers…” wrote Amul India on Instagram sharing the Cannes glimpses of Manthan.
The restored version will be released in 50 cities and 100 theatres across the country on June 1 and 2. It is a collaborative effort between the Film Heritage Foundation and the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. with Cinepolis India and PVR-INOX Ltd.
Cities like Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Delhi, Chennai, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Noida among others are on the list where cinephiles can watch the film.
