Today marks the birth anniversary of the timeless diva, Suchitra Sen. What better way to celebrate her legacy than by watching her timeless classics? The Padma Shri and Banga Bibhushan who would have turned 93 today, has left behind a rich legacy for cinephiles with her graceful screen presence and her acting prowess.
On this special day, here are a few My Kolkata recommendations that will make your weekend special:
- Saat Pake Bandha - A romantic drama starring Suchitra Sen and Soumitra Chatterjee. Directed by Ajoy Kar, it was declared a box-office hit in 1963.
- Sharey Chuattar - It's a comedy film, directed by Nirmal Dey, based on a novel by Bijon Bhattacharya. Suchitra was cast opposite Uttam Kumar in the film, which released in 1953.
- Devdas - Set against the backdrop of rural Bengal, Devdas is Hindi period drama, directed by Bimal Roy. It was based on the Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel by the same name. It released in 1955. The film starred Dilip Kumar as Devdas, while Suchitra Sen debuted in Bollywood as Paro.
- Harano Sur - This is perhaps the first film that Uttam Kumar had produced along with Ajoy Kar. A superhit romantic drama, starring Uttam and Suchitra, it was based on the 1942 American film, Random Harvest.
- Deep Jwele Jaai - The film was based on Bengali short story, Nurse Mitra, by Ashutosh Mukherjee. It was remade in Hindi, in 1969, by the same director Asit Sen, as Khamoshi. While the Bengali version featured Suchitra and Basanta Choudhury, the Hindi version featured Waheeda Rehman and Rajesh Khanna.
- Chaowa Paowa - This rom-com was based on the 1934 Academy Awards winning American film It Happened One Night, and featured Suchitra Sen and Uttam Kumar. It was director Tarun Majumdar's first film that turned out to be a hit at the box office.
- Devi Chaudhurani - Based on a Bengali novel by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, The film starred Suchitra Sen opposite Ranjit Mallick. Directed by Dinen Gupta, the film released in 1974.
