Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho returns to the big
screen with Mickey 17 — a gripping sci-fi thriller starring Robert
Pattinson. The film is adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7
and follows the story of Mickey Barnes, an “Expendable” tasked with colonising
the icy planet Niflheim. As an expendable worker, Mickey faces death regularly,
only to be regenerated each time in a new body, retaining most of his memories.
The plot takes a twist when an accident results in the creation of a second
Mickey before the first one dies, adding tension and intrigue to an already
dangerous mission. The first trailer offers a glimpse into Mickey’s chaotic
world, with Steven Yeun’s character, Berto, telling him to “have a nice
death.”
Initially set for a March 2024 release, the film is now
scheduled to hit theatres on January 31, 2025. Joining Pattinson in the
star-studded cast are Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, and Toni
Collette. Produced by Warner Bros, the film’s team includes Bong Joon-ho, Dede
Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Dooho Choi, with Brad Pitt as an executive
producer. Mickey 17 marks Bong Joon-ho’s return to directing after the
massive success of Parasite, which won four Academy Awards and earned
over $260 million worldwide, setting high expectations for this upcoming sci-fi
epic.
