Sunday Classics: Batman’s gritty big-screen outing turns 30!
‘Batman Returns’ (1992) explored the character’s loneliness and remains a compelling watch

A gritty and dark tone is second nature to Batman’s characterisation today, but it wasn’t Nolan who pioneered this phenomenon on film. Tim Burton’s Batman Returns – the 1992 sequel to his 1989 film – largely sowed the seeds for the caped crusader we see today, and his penchant for staying in the shadows. As it completes 30 years, this film remains a distinctly mature take, not just for exploring Bruce Wayne’s loneliness, but the Penguin’s lust for power, and Catwoman’s acceptance of her sexuality, all tropes that have since inspired many Batman stories. If you are a fanboy of his modern iteration, revisiting this classic could be the best addition to your Sunday schedule.
