When Hoichoi announced Parambrata Chattopadhyay’s latest directorial venture, Parnashavarir Shaap, on the streaming platform’s seventh anniversary, it was an exciting piece of information for cinephiles and Parambrata fans for multiple reasons. Firstly, it marks the debut of veteran actor Chiranjeet on OTT, and secondly, Parambrata’s directorial ventures like Abhijaan, Boudi Canteen, Bony, Lorai have already showcased the actor’s prowess as a director. Parnashavarir Shaap, a tale of spook, horror and mystery, adds yet another feather to this actor-director’s cap.
The trailer that dropped recently on YouTube and on other social media handles, indeed makes one shudder with its murky plot, cinematography, acting chops of Chiranjeet, Surangana Bandyopadhyay, Gaurav Chakrabarty and Anindita Bose. Surangana as Mitul’s vacation to Chamakpur turns into a series of sinister events, and the actress’s oscillation between human and supernatural is a horror flick lover’s delight. Chiranjeet as Niren Bhaduri, the occult expert, adds to the intrigue.
The trailer starts with a subtle reference to Shakespeare’s Hamlet’s memorable line — “There are more things in heaven and Earth…” and leads on to frames and soundscapes fitting the narrative. Unravel the sneak peek clicking on the link below.
When My Kolkata quizzed about his latest directorial, Parnashavarir Shaap, Parambrata shared, “As we know, the web series is an adaptation of Souvik Chakraborty's story by the same name. It is not exactly a literal audio-visual translation. I believe that is also not the right way to go about adapting literary pieces to the audio-visual screen. And adaptation has to have its own take on the story. I have always been obsessed about supernatural, especially the mythologies and the mythological elements that surround the idea of supernatural, even horror, in our country. As a child, I used to be scared, but as I grew up I started digging in a little deeper into this subject. And I got more and more invested and interested in it. I am still scared, but I think the degree of that scare is just what is required. It’s just enough to keep you fascinated in the supernatural genre. I think you do need to be a little bit scared to appreciate the magic or the fun or the sheer joy to enjoy the supernatural genre. I wish to continue doing that. People have been appreciating the trailer quite a bit. I really hope they appreciate the piece as well. If they do and once they do, I wish to continue making more pieces in this genre. I have a lot of makers, who I consider my icons and idols. In recent times, I think Mike Flanagan is someone I really look up to.”
The web series releases on November 10.
