An Austenian rom-com usually makes for a great comfort watch. However, the new Dakota Johnson-starrer Persuasion may just make you cringe if you’re a Jane Austen loyalist. Despite a stellar cast, Carrie Cracknell’s feature debut starring Johnson, Richard E. Grant, Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding and Cosmo Jarvis, is being deemed an inauthentic take on the novel.
Twitter has a lot of opinions about Anne Elliott’s (Johnson) 4th wall breaks, the modern humour, the vapid romantic triangle and also some elements of the wardrobe (do berets belong in the Regency era?). Viewers were quick to deem the film a Fleabag-style adaptation - not that there’s anything wrong with it, only if the narrative wasn’t dumbed down for new-age audiences.
