Fans, players at Salt Lake Stadium pay special tribute to Sunil Chhetri in last game
As India drew against Kuwait, Chhetri was given a farewell to remember by his fans and teammates

After 19 years of blood sweat and tears representing his country, Sunil Chhetri walked off the field one last time as an Indian footballer. Featuring in his 151st and final match for India, the legendary skipper played his final minutes as a Blue Tiger, when Salt Lake Stadium hosted India’s FIFA World Cup Qualifiers group game against Kuwait on June 6. The captain, leader, legend was given a proper farewell by all the fans at the stadium who roared his name and came with massive posters to pay their tribute to the 39-year-old No.11 as he finished of a remarkable career with 94 goals to his name in Indian colours, the 4th in the all-time list of goal scorers at the international level.
The forward will retire as India’s most capped player with a cabinet that saw him win 11 trophies, including three in 2023 when India won the SAFF Championship, Intercontinental Cup and the Tri-Nation Series in the same calendar year. For his contribution to Indian football, Chhetri has been bestowed with the Arjuna Award, Padma Shri and most recently, the Khel Ratna Award in 2021. While he would have liked to bow out with a win, Sunil Chhetri took a lap around the ground thanking all the fans who came to support him before walking away to a guard of honour by his teammates.
