As everyone walked out of the theatre after watching Oppenheimer, their minds kept replaying one scene. Christopher Nolan’s masterful direction shone through in the shot, where they first tested an atomic bomb. Film director Quek Shio decided to recreate the shot… with coffee!
The scene, which he uploaded on Instagram, elicits the same response of intrigue, wonder, drama and tension that the original scene from the film brought out. To top it off, it also personifies the explosive process of making a good, strong cup of coffee, from the mechanics of grounding beans, to using a ballistic coffee machine, and finally, the calming feeling of adding cream. Like Nolan, Shio aced the look and feel of the scene completely with practical effects, without any CGI.
He also unveiled a host of reels, breaking down how he shot the entire sequence. These are extremely insightful for any film enthusiast!
