Great things happened in the 1990’s and two big moments for us were when Sushmita Sen won the Miss India title and then again the Miss Universe title in the US. To recall that milestone, designer Ritu Kumar narrates the story that led up to that moment, from signing a deal to designing clothes to shooting outside the Taj Mahal.
Tasked with creating Sushmita Sen’s wardrobe for the US tour, Ritu Kumar sent suits, kurta-pyjamas and saris made in bandhani and zardozi style. When a wardrobe mishap occurred before a Taj Mahal shoot, they quickly improvised, transforming a pink sari into a stunning ensemble. Despite the chaos, the resulting images were worth it. “To date, I think of her in that pink sari wearing a crown and the UP Police personnel around us clapping with pride! These images were splashed all over the country’s leading publications with credits to us and, more importantly, to the weavers,” she writes.
