Forty-one years ago, on June 25, a stellar West Indies side had the champagne ready in their dressing room — confident they would easily defeat an underdog Indian team and win their third World Cup title at the iconic Lord’s cricket ground. However, Kapil Dev and his men had different plans. This was the day India etched its name into the history books of cricket and forever changed the sport in our country. As the nation celebrated by recalling fond memories, Kolkata Knight Riders shared this reel featuring iconic images from the Prudential Cup final when India scripted history.
The landscape of Indian cricket was transformed, inspiring millions, including a young Sachin Tendulkar, to take up the sport. While the country honoured those who brought the first taste of cricketing glory, members of the 1983 squad, including Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar and BCCI President Roger Binny, celebrated with a cake-cutting alongside Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Siraj and Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar in the West Indies. Forty-one years on, the heroics of 1983 remain a major inspiration as our Men in Blue gear up for their semi-final clash against England in Guyana tomorrow.
