“Ultimate Honour to be the 1st ever Indian player to be nominated for the International Tennis Hall of Fame Class of 2024!” wrote tennis legend Leander Paes on social media, sharing the new feather in his cap. And congratulatory messages have been pouring in from sports fans ever since. The sports icon is not only the first Indian, but also the first Asian to have received the prestigious nomination.
The 50-year-old, who has won Grand Slam titles in men’s and mixed doubles 18 times, is joined by veteran tennis player Vijay Amritraj in the nominations. In a sports career spanning three decades, Paes has brought India glories like being India’s only Olympic medalist in tennis in 1996. He also won bronze in the Atlanta Olympic Games and is the recipient of India’s highest honour in sports, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna. Paes has been conferred the Arjuna Award, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. His achievements also include being the first Indian and the only tennis player to compete in Olympic games seven times in a row.
Signing off with “here's to making history!”, Paes also shared a gratitude note along with sharing his photo.
