The US Consulate in Kolkata is going all out with Pride Month celebrations, featuring some inspiring icons to talk about important things. While Trinetra Haldar had an empowering message for queer kids in one of their earlier reels, a recent one features Pulitzer Prize-winning American author Andrew Sean Greer.
Greer is an openly queer novelist and short story writer known for his advocation of human rights. When asked in the video how he advocates for human rights in his writings, he gives an insight into how he sees his characters — gay or otherwise.
Known for his sharp wit and keen insight into human nature, Greer won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2018 for his novel Less. The book follows Arthur Less, a failed novelist who embarks on a world tour to avoid the wedding of his former lover. Greer’s writing often explores themes of love, identity, and the passage of time, characterised by humour and a light touch even when dealing with profound subjects.
While Less is his biggest work, here are a few other books that you can lay your hands on:
The Confessions of Max Tivoli: Max Tivoli ages backward, experiencing life in reverse while pursuing love across time.
The Story of a Marriage: Pearlie Cook’s marriage is tested when hidden secrets resurface in 1950s San Francisco.
The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells: After electroconvulsive therapy, Greta Wells explores alternate lives in different eras, seeking to reconcile her true self.
