This June marks the 60th anniversary of the original publication of Sankar’s best-selling novel Chowringhee. It also marks 15 years of its English translation (by Arunava Sinha) which went on to win the Vodafone Crossword Book Award in 2007, for the best translation.
The story first came out in a serialised format in the weekly Bengali magazine Desh before being released as a novel. The page-turner chronicles life in a premier hotel situated in a bustling Kolkata neighbourhood and offers a realistic look at modern metropolitan life. Chowringhee has been adapted into two popular Bengali films — The Uttam Kumar-starrer Chowringhee which was released in 1968 and Srijit Mukherji’s 2019 drama Shah Jahan Regency, starring Anirban Bhattacharya and Swastika Mukherjee.
