Human relationships like the bond between grandfather and grandson in Uttaradhikar, political and social turmoil such as the Naxalite movement in Kalbela, the life and struggles of people in the tea gardens, where he spent his childhood, to a young detective’s adventures — author Samaresh Majumdar’s body of works spanned a vast range of topics.
The Sahtiya Akademi awardee who passed away on May 8 at the age of 81 leaves behind several literary gems. If you are looking for reading suggestions, pick up the Animesh series — Uttaradhikar, Kalbela, Kalpurush and (much later) Moushalkal — that he is perhaps best known for.
For those looking for a lighter read, there’s the Arjun series.
Majumdar’s other works include Saatkahon, Daybadhha and Aath Kuthuri Noy Doroja. Many of his works have also been adapted into television series (Uttaridhakar and Kalpurush where Kaushik Sen first made an appearance as Arko) and films — Buno Haansh starring Dev, Sabyasachi Chakraborty-starrer Arjun – Kalimpong E Sitaharan.
