November 19 marked the
99th birth anniversary of music legend Salil Chowdhury. Celebrating his life
and legacy, his daughter Antara Chowdhury and popular singer Sidhu collaborated
to pay a mellifluous homage. Antara has followed her father’s footsteps and is
a well-known music artiste. Sidhu, who is also one of the prominent names in
Bengali band music and is a part of Cactus, showcased a different side of him
in the music video titled Tumi Biplab Tumi Anuvab. The video gives a glimpse
into the personal belongings of Salil Chowdhury, like his gaaner khata
(song diary), his books, photos and glasses. Tumi Biplab Tumi Anuvab
also has poet Mandakranta Sen featured in it.
Salil Chowdhury was a
man of many talents. He was a lyricist, composer, arranger and author. The
first Bengali film for which he composed music was Paribortan (1949). He
was affectionately referred to as Salilda.
2025 is the year of
Salil Chowdhury’s birth centenary and musicians from West Bengal have been
gearing up to celebrate the special occasion. This year, Sourendro-Soumyojit,
along with Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Somlata Acharyya Chowdhury and others,
also performed a music concert paying homage to Chowdhury.
