Sensitise, educate,
start the dialogue early, break the stigma, bring the change. That’s how social
stereotypes can be brought to an end, and it is an evolving process. Period or
menstruation, a natural biological phenomena in girls and women, has been stigmatised
for the longest. From marking those five days “impure”, not allowing them to
perform rituals to wrapping an essential commodity like sanitary napkins in
black polythene bags to hide them — the list is long.
While we have come a
long way with sanitary napkin vending machines, initiating the much needed
“period talk”, male members of the family understanding menstruation and its
effects and helping the female members, the battle to break the stigma is still
on. And joining the sensitisation journey are singers Shreya Ghoshal and
Sunidhi Chauhan, who have collaborated with Whisper India for a period song — Period
Ka Matlab Healthy Hai Aap.
In the two music videos
that were launched on World Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, the two eminent
singers were seen delivering two renditions of the song among rooms full of
budding minds — both boys and girls — making them understand the why-what-when
about menstruation. Listen to Sunidhi’s version of the song here.
