Sanjay
Leela Bhansali’s latest project, the Netflix
series Heeramandi, promises his signature grandeur, as usual. The
series’ inaugural song, Sakal Ban, not only showcases the filmmaker’s
visual and musical prowess but also launches his new music label, Bhansali
Music. With Raja Hasan’s rendition, the video of the song features Manisha
Koirala, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari and Sharmin Segal, who add to the charm
of the series. However, this song goes beyond entertainment — it carries a
700-year-old tale that reshapes our understanding of music. The roots of Sakal
Ban apparently trace back to the 12th or 13th century, when the Sufi singer
Amir Khusau enriched it with a soul-stirring narrative, adding layers of
history and depth to the melody. Given the colourful state of mind we are in
now, this song could not have come at a better time to add to the Holi
festivities.
