About 25 years ago, Kolkata hosted the first
ever march for queer rights in the country, as 15 people took
to the streets for the 1999 Friendship Walk. Since then, the event has only
grown bigger in scale, becoming a beacon of inclusivity and diversity not just
for people from the city, but all of Bengal.
The 2024 edition of the Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk promises to take this
legacy to newer heights on December 15. Thousands will gather at 2pm outside
Lady Brabourne College, opposite Park Circus Maidan, armed with slogans,
posters and flags and march through the length of Park Street, culminating in a
grand congregation at the Maidan. The event is a landmark in the city’s
calendar — bringing members of the queer community and allies together. So,
what are your plans?
