The rise of zamindars and the elite class in Kolkata marked the inception of the Babu culture, and as the Babus gained prominence, the term ‘Baiji’ gradually became more widespread. Initially, baijis were popular classical entertainers in royal courts during the middle ages. However, over a period of time, the unfortunate association with prostitution tainted the occupation of these artistes, who started catering to the desires of the elite class for their livelihood. From Hatibagan to Beadon Street, these Baijis became household names, transitioning from the royal courts to the theatre and later into the bioscope industry.
Presented by Academy Theatre and Riddhi Bandopadhyay Music Academy, in association with My Kolkata, the show, aptly titled ‘Baiji Sangeet’, is set to delve into the historical journey of the Baijis on December 28, at Gyan Manch.
Directed by Riddhi and Devajit, it will feature actors Debjani Chatterjee, Debdut Ghosh, and Avirup Sengupta, who'll contribute through dance, recitation, and choreography respectively. This presentation promises to be a captivating exploration of the Baiji legacy. So, make sure you attend this.
